What?: Treaty organizations formed after World War II to defend Western nations during the Cold War.
Where?:The U.S., Great Britain, France, Canada, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Norway, West Germany, Italy, Norway and Denmark..)
When?: NATO was formed in 1949
Who?:The U.S. is the leader of NATO
How?: The U.S. compelled its allies to join in fear of Soviet aggression. An attack against one member would be considered an attack against all the members (collective security)
Why?:The U.S. formed NATO to discourage a Soviet attack on Western Europe.
Results:
1) The World once again was divided into two armed camps.
2) European armies were kept on high alert for close to 40 years with weapons at the ready pointed at their neighbors.
3) Increased tension and fear of war.
4) No major war resulted between NATO and the nations of The Warsaw Pact.

Gross Domestic Product

A social science term that measures economic output (production). A nations gross domestic product or GDP is the total value of all the goods and services produced in a nation.

Example: A nation consists of 4 people, a doctor, a lawyer, a factory worker and a toy maker.

The Doctor charges $10,000 for 2010
The Lawyer charges $10,000 for 2010
The factory worker makes $20,000 worth of good in 2010
The toymaker makes $4,000 worth of toys in 2010

The nations GDP for 2010 is $45,000
The Per Capita (per person GDP) is $11,000

Some jobs like teacher or police officer because they do not produce a good or a sell-able service, these jobs do not count as part of GDP. However a teacher or a police officer doing tutoring or private security, these jobs do count toward GDP.

A nation is a group of people who share a common religion, language, history, culture and geography. A nation IS NOT a place.

For example the Italian people are a nation as the vast majority of Italians speak Italian, are Catholic, live or came from the Italian peninsula and share a similar historical background and culture. America IS NOT a nation as Ameirca is made up many diverse peoples and cultures.

Pride or devotion to ones nation is called nationalism.

What?: An Enlightenment era philosopher who supported the idea of natural rights.
Where?: England
When?: 1632-1704
Major Book?: Two Treatises on Government
Main Ideas:
1) People are naturally good.
2) All people have the rights to life liberty and property.
3) Government exists to protect the rights of the people.
4) If people are unhappy with their government they have the right to change their government.
Why?: Growing up in during the English Civil War, Locke was exposed to many of the evils of mankind and he began to think that government had an obligation to its citizens.
Importance: His ideas and the ideas of other Enlightenment era philosophers helped to inspire the Age of Revolutions.

What?: A time period when man began to question and challenge the rules of government and authority.
Where?: Western Europe, primarily England and France
When?: 1600’s and 1700’s
Who?: Philosophers, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Montesquieu, Rousseau and Voltaire.
How?: The writing books that questioned the world and disucssing those works in Salon Meetings.
Why?: The questioning spirit of the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution and Reformation continues into the area of government and politics.
Importance:
1) The new ideas of natural rights inspire the American and French Revolutions (Age of Revolutions)
2) The ideas of the Enlightenment are found today in our Constitution and the laws of the United States.
