Where? Zionism began in Europe but led to the creation of Israel in the Middle East

Who? Theodore Hertzl
Why? Since Roman times Jews had lived as a minority in the countries of Europe. Jews were victims of discrimination and seen as outsiders. Hertzl wanted to create a Jewish State where Jews could live freely.
How?
1) Jews began holding Zionist conferences where they planned their future state.
2) Jews began buying land from the Ottoman Turks in Palestine and established communities for European Jews to move to.
Results: The eventual creation of the modern State of Israel in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people.
Importance: Another example of a nineteenth century nationalsit movement.
