What?: French people stormed to a fortress believed to hold arms and when they were refused they fought and killed the commander and 5 guards, but found no firearms.

How:
About 800 Parisians gathered around the Bastille and demanded that the gates were opened. The commander would not open the gates. Eventually the mob broke through the defenses and killed some guards.
Why?: The members of the Third Estate were discontented with conditions under the old regieme because they were all poor and since the taxes were increased, it was hard for them to pay the taxes. The members also found it hard to feed themselves. There was rumor that royal troops were planning on occupying Paris.
Importance:
It became a symbol of the French Revolution and is still recognized today because of the huge impact it had on France. It was the beginning of a new type of life in France. This is a day that symbolizes the French Revolution. today this day is celebrated as the French national holiday.
