How?:
1)Advances in technology (specifically the anti-malaria drug quinine) made the colonization Africa possible
2) The newspaper reports of Henry Stanley publicized the riches of Africa
Why?: Europeans were searching for new colonies and new military bases.
Importance: Africa gave the European powers a new arena in which to compete for world power.
Results:
1) Europeans began competing for the resources of Africa
2) New nations Germany and Italy were desperate to get into the “game” of imperialism and enrich their people and increase their power.
3) Britain and France wanted to keep their lead as “imperial powers”
