What?: A set of laws given to FranceThe Napoleonic Code
Who?: Napoleon
Where?: France
When?: 1804
Why?: To codify the rights of the French Revolution as law and provide order and stability for France.
How?: Napoleon had the laws of France rewritten and edited to serve his purposes as the new Emperor of France
Results?:
1) Most rights from the Revolution were protected by the Code (Freedom of Religion, Life, Liberty, Property)
2) Women lost much of the equality gained under the revolution.
3) Napoleon still had wide powers and ruled as an absolute monarch jailing those that
opposed him and making decisions for France on his own.
Importance: The Napoleonic Code still forms the basis for the laws of France, much of Western Europe and even the State of Lousiana.
