As a result of the demand that Japan open up its ports to America, Japan opened its doors and they also culturally diffused. The Japanese westernized but they made sure that they kept their culture, while diffusing with other cultures and belief system.
Why?:
The Americans wanted to trade with the Japanese and to open up Japanese markets to American goods.
Importance: Perry's mission would open Japan up to western trade and jump start the Meiji Restoration that would lead to Japan remaking itself into a modern world power.
