Historical Importance: Originally important to Spain and Portugal for resources such as sugar, the area became important to the United States as a source of cheap produce in the 1920’s and as a battleground during the Cold War.
Modern Importance: Following independence from Spain the new republics of Latin America quickly fell under the control of local dictators. Today these nations are once again attempting to form democracies.
Geography: 1) Andes Mountains 2) Amazon River and Rain Forrest 3) Panama Canal 4) Resources such as coffee, sugar, tropical fruit, oil and illegal drugs.
