What?: When a strong country takes over a territory to exploit its resources and markets. Imperialism - Global History 2
Where?: Mostly European nations took colonies in Asia and Africa
When?: 1800’s
Who?: Britain’s Cecil Rhodes is an example, Imperialist, Belgium’s King Leopold is another.
How?: Due to the invention of the steam engine, European nations had a gigantic technological advantage on the native peoples of Africa and Asia.
Why?:European factories needed a source of raw materials and a market to sell the goods that were produced.
Importance:
1) The nations of Europe dominate the world for close to 200 years.
2) The nations of Europe grow rich and powerful while the peoples of Africa and Asia are exploited and their states grow poor and weak.
3) Growing animosity (anger) toward the Europeans from the colonized peoples.
4)An attitude in Europe that Europeans are superior to Africans and Asians.
