Why?: To unify Italy under the leadership of Sardinia's King Emmanuel.
How?: By winning the attention of Napoleon III after the Crimean War against Russia, Cavour was able to make a secret deal with Napoleon which guaranteed them help in any war against Austria. Cavour was able to gain support from a powerful ally (France) in war. Cavour also supported the actions of other Italian nationalists such as Garibaldi in the south
Results: Sardinia won the war against Austria and annexed Lombardy. Also, Nationalist groups in Nothern Italian states rebelled against Austrian leaders and joined Sardinia which also expaned Sardinia's empire. Cavour died three months after the Declaration of the Kingdom of Italy.
