American Revolution

What? The successful rebellion of British colonists living in North America against the British crown.
Where? The colonies lying along the eastern seaboard of North America
When?1775-1783
Who? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin
Why? Wealthy colonists were losing profits due to the mercantilist policies of Great Britain. This fact combined with the ideas of liberty and freedom learned from Enlightenment era philosophers like John Locke and Voltaire, inspired the colonists to rebellion.
Importance:
1) The American colonies became the United States of America the worlds first successful democratic republic since the days of ancient Athens.
2) The American Revolution inspired other peoples to seek their own political independence.
